You may enjoy binge watching Netflix, soaking in the bathtub for hours, or simply taking a long drive alone. But let’s be honest, did you ever feel lonely once in a while? When you are having some struggles in your workplace, perhaps? Or when you are working from home and the only person that you meet physically is the GrabFood rider?
Phew, it has been more than two years since the pandemic hit Malaysia. While some of us manage to make ourselves comfortable living in the virtual world, little to no one talked about experiencing quarantine fatigue due to the prolonged isolation and social distancing. Sure, being alone can be enjoyable — especially if you are an introvert. But, how do you enjoy being alone… without being lonely? Lucky for you, I had tried many ways and here are the top 3 things that helped me to live ‘alone’ life to the fullest:-
1. Find your 'Ikigai'
At one point in your life, had you ever questioned yourself, is this the right career for me? Am I really enjoying what I’m doing? I’m pretty confident that these are the thoughts that have been keeping most people awake at night. Good news for you, finding out your ‘Ikigai’ could be the answer for your doubts. The work life balance and being financially independent are all cool and stuff but when it comes to the nitty gritty of it, believe me when I said I had been doubting myself throughout the years before a friend told me about ‘Ikigai.
The idea behind ‘Ikigai’ is all about finding your true happiness and joy in life through purpose. If you don’t know your ‘Ikigai’, give a look online. Take as much time as you need to answer the questions while in the search of your ‘Ikigai’, the end result will have you feeling completely refreshed.
2. “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.”
When I was a kid, I remember listening to “you are what you eat” on the televisions, radios and the teachers to get us to eat more fruits and vegetables. It never worked though, not for me at least. I guess that explains a lot about my not-so-healthy skin and hair. But when I apply the saying into daily life, every day feels like a win. How, you ask?
Pay attention to what you read and watch. Information that you consume may have an unconscious effect on your emotions and thoughts, especially when it’s continuous. If you’re worried about the number of Covid-19 cases that have been continuously increasing for the last few months, obsessively checking the live updates on Covid-19 may not be necessary. Flatten the curve is probably gonna take longer than we expected, thus, obsessing over the live updates every second may give the impression that nothing is changing.
Instead of wrapping your mind in a cocoon of stress, think of ways that actually do good for you. Get your vaccine jabs and practise social distancing — that’s all you need to do.
3. Go on a date once a week
Planning on a date with your partner can be fun, but planning on a date with yourself can be one of the best days of your life. I know what you’re thinking. You would do anything for someone else, but when it comes to yourself, it's tough to even look at yourself in the mirror. Am I right, or am I right?
I get how easy it is to be hard on yourself.
It’s why you need to treat yourself like someone who loves you would treat you. When was the last time you treated yourself with a nice dinner? How many times did you restrain yourself from buying the new seasonal Starbucks drink? Really, we should be spending less and saving more during these uncertain times. But hey, if we take one day per month to plan a date with ourselves, what harm can be done? Make self-love a habit and you’ll be happy you did it.
There you go...
When you hear people say “me time” is addictive — it means you’re just enjoying your alone time. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want and you don’t have to answer to anyone. Your mind feels much more fulfilled and you would be happy you gave yourself a “me time”.
